How it works: Each student brings in sheet music to 5 songs s/he knows well and wants to sing. In an unthreatening and supportive environment, accompanied by Alpher on the piano and coached gently by Litt and Alpher, students will sing thru their repertoire, working on
  • interpretation of lyrics
  • phrasing and musicality
  • acting/presentation
  • making songs their own
By week 3, students will choose one song to prepare for the class show. The last 3 weeks of class will be spent working closely with each student to get that song up to performance level, as well as devising patter to introduce the song. Students are encouraged to bring a recording device of their choosing.

Maximum: 6 students, to guarantee everyone 20 minutes of stage-time per class.

Cabaret is an intimate musical art form, in which a performer puts his or her personal stamp on a song through honest exploration of the lyric. Students do not need to know how to read music, nor do they need to have taken voice lessons or studied acting to join The Brooklyn Cabaret Workshop. That said, professionals from other theatrical and musical genres who are interested in exploring the unique art form of cabaret are welcome in the workshop!
“I just finished taking the Brooklyn Cabaret Workshop right here in Park Slope and wanted to highly recommend it to others who sing, or enjoy singing, even if you have no formal training whatsoever. The co-teachers, Jennie and David, were amazing at helping each of us find our personal connection to a song. And learning to sing with an accompanist instead of a recording, was a great experience – and lots of fun. It was also a small class and very supportive, which was helpful for many of us first-time cabaret singers.” — May 2013
